Modern kitchen with dark cabinets, stainless steel fridge, and wooden stools at the island. Books and decor on shelves. Bright, airy vibe.

Homes in Colonial Village often offer strong structure and desirable locations but require thoughtful updates to support modern living. This project on Lochridge Road demonstrates how strategic home additions in Charlotte can dramatically expand functionality while preserving neighborhood character.

The homeowners wanted to increase living space while improving the flow and usability of the existing home.

Project Goals

The project focused on several key priorities:

• Add a second story with additional bedrooms

• Expand the first floor to create a primary suite

• Raise ceiling heights to improve openness

• Create better connection between kitchen, dining, and living spaces

• Add covered outdoor spaces for entertaining

Renovation and Addition Scope

The renovation added significant new space while completely updating the original structure.

Major improvements included:

• Adding 1,262 square feet through a second-story addition

• Expanding the first floor by 190 square feet for a new primary suite

• Installing a new staircase to access the second floor

• Adding Jack-and-Jill bathrooms between upstairs bedrooms

• Opening the first-floor layout for kitchen, dining, and living areas

• Installing a new multi-slide door leading to a Trex deck and patio

All mechanical, electrical, plumbing, insulation, drywall, and trim were replaced during the renovation.

Construction Challenges

One of the most technically complex parts of the project involved structural work required for the new second story.

Key challenges included:

• Underpinning existing footings to support new loads

• Installing structural steel beams for the addition

• Matching the original 1950s brick to maintain visual continuity

• Aligning new flooring with the existing structure

The result is a home that feels cohesive despite the dramatic transformation.
