Green kitchen with patterned tile backsplash, shelves with jars, and fruit bowls. White counter, gold handles, and a modern stove.

Homes in Plaza Midwood often come with historic charm—but limited space and outdated layouts. This project on Chestnut Avenue demonstrates how a well-planned addition can dramatically improve functionality while preserving the home’s original character.

Located in the Plaza Midwood neighborhood of Charlotte, the project required careful coordination to work within tight lot lines and maintain the architectural integrity of the home.

What the Homeowners Wanted

The homeowners wanted to expand their living space while improving the functionality of the existing home.

Key goals included:

• Creating a true primary suite

• Adding custom walk-in closets

• Designing a dedicated laundry space

• Updating the kitchen layout

• Building a screened porch for entertaining

Renovation and Addition Scope

The project added 470 square feet of new heated space to accommodate the new primary suite.

Additional improvements included:

• Reconfiguring the kitchen layout

• Renovating the existing bathroom

• Adding a dedicated laundry room

• Constructing a 288-square-foot screened porch with vaulted ceilings and Infratech heaters

Historic Home Challenges

Working on a home addition in Plaza Midwood requires special attention to detail. The renovation team carefully matched the original wood siding and millwork from the early 1900s home.

Local craftsmen produced custom millwork to replicate the original doors and trim throughout the house, helping the new addition feel consistent with the historic structure.
